The monsoon has become active once again in the country. Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in North and East India. On Sunday, 23 people died in Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, and Uttarakhand due to rain, flash floods, landslides, and lightning-related incidents.

The most damage occurred in Poonch and Rajouri of Jammu and Kashmir, as 12 people lost their lives due to flash floods and landslides. In Rajouri, 30-50 vehicles were swept away, while several bridges and public properties were damaged.

In Nagaland’s Mon district, 9 people died due to floods and landslides. Meanwhile, 2 people died due to a lightning strike in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing in several states, and a red alert has been declared in 10 districts of Uttarakhand.

According to ISRO’s satellite images, monsoon clouds are covering about 70% of the country. Good rainfall is expected in over 60% of the country, including North, East, and Northeast India, until July 25. So far, monsoon rainfall is 24% below normal.

July 21:

  • Red alert for heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal.
  • Orange alert for rain in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Western Uttar Pradesh.
  • Heavy rain will also occur in Eastern UP, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim, Bengal, Eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Maharashtra.
  • Strong winds may blow in Karnataka and Telangana.

July 22:

  • Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal have a red alert for heavy rain.
  • Delhi, UP, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim, Bengal have an orange alert for rain.
  • Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Kerala will experience heavy rain.
