The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued orders to close 58 engineering and technical colleges across the country during the academic session 2025-26. However, students who are already admitted to these colleges will not be left stranded.

Maximum private colleges losed
Private colleges have suffered the most in this action. Out of the total 58 institutions being closed, 55 colleges are private, i.e., run by private funding. Only 3 colleges are government-aided.

According to AICTE, when the final batch of courses currently being taught in the college also passes out, the operation of the college will be completely shut down. If complete closure is required in any case, students can be transferred to other colleges as per AICTE rules.

More than 950 courses closed
An AICTE official told PTI that this action is not limited to just closing colleges.
During this time, more than 950 courses (Technical and Engineering Courses) running in different technical institutions across the country have also been permanently shut down.
Courses in which students had no interest or for which colleges did not have proper resources to run them have been removed from the list.
What is AICTE:
This is the statutory advisory body and regulator for technical education in India. It oversees programmes in engineering, architecture, management, and pharmacy. AICTE orders the closure of institutions for various reasons such as low student admissions, inability to maintain the required number of teachers, non-compliance with infrastructure and operational standards, etc.
