A government officer in Bihar’s Supaul allegedly got her engineer husband murdered inside a moving train. Police said that Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) Asmita Kumari had been plotting the murder of her husband Dev Kumar Gunjan since the second day of their marriage in 2018.

Police investigation revealed that Asmita’s boyfriend Ajit Kumar was also involved in the conspiracy. The duo allegedly hired shooter Raju Kumar for Rs 4 lakh to carry out the murder.

On June 11, Raju allegedly shot dead Dev Kumar inside the Jan Sadharan Express. The accused allegedly tried to portray the murder as a robbery incident. However, police arrested Asmita Kumari, Ajit Kumar and shooter Raju Kumar after analysing call details and other evidence.

Asmita, Dev Kumar and Ajit Kumar had started their careers together in the electricity department in 2017. Dev and Asmita later got married, but after the marriage, Asmita and Ajit allegedly became close.

Know Every Aspect of This Murder Case

1. When and where did the murder happen?

Dev Kumar Gunjan was travelling from Jamui to Supaul on June 11 in the Jan Sadharan Express to meet his wife Asmita. At around 8:30 pm, between Mansi railway station and Badlaghat railway station, shooter Raju allegedly shot him dead.

Dev Kumar, originally from Godda in Jharkhand, was working as a Grade-I technician at the Malaypur Power Grid in Jamui. His wife Asmita was posted as a Motor Vehicle Inspector in Supaul, while her alleged boyfriend Ajit Kumar was also working as a Grade-I technician.

Dev Kumar suffered a bullet injury to his chest on June 11 and died during treatment.

2. Wife claimed he was killed during robbery

Asmita Kumari initially told police that her husband was killed after opposing a robbery attempt inside the train.

Police began the investigation based on her statement but raised questions over the incident. Investigators questioned why only Dev Kumar was shot if it was merely a robbery case.

After the incident, Gunjan's wife Asmita was seen crying and wailing the most.

3. 186 phone calls between Asmita and Ajit

During the investigation of Dev Kumar’s mobile phone, police found a number saved under the name “Kamina”. After checking the call details and chat records of the number, police found that Asmita and the person linked to it had spoken 186 times in the last one year.

Police also found that on the day of the incident, the two had multiple WhatsApp calls from 3 am until the murder took place.

4. Call details and technical evidence revealed the truth

Rail SP Harishankar Kumar said police had doubts over the robbery angle. The SIT started connecting the entire case through call detail records, mobile locations and technical evidence. The investigation revealed that Dev Kumar was not killed for resisting robbery but allegedly due to a love affair and an extramarital relationship.

5. Murder deal fixed for Rs 4 lakh, shooter received Rs 1.6 lakh advance

Police said the contract to kill Dev Kumar was given to Raju Kumar alias Dheeraj, a resident of Ghosi in Jehanabad. The murder deal was finalised for around Rs 4 lakh. Police said Ajit Kumar transferred the money to the shooter to ensure that no evidence was left behind. Raju allegedly received Rs 1.60 lakh as advance payment.

Before carrying out the murder, the shooter allegedly travelled three times on the same train to track Dev Kumar’s travel timings.

Asmita and Ajit’s alleged love story

All three started working together in one office

In 2017, Asmita Kumari, Dev Kumar Gunjan and Ajit Kumar started their careers together in the electricity department. All three joined the same department and were working as Grade-I technicians nine years ago. A year later, in 2018, Dev Kumar Gunjan and Asmita Kumari got married. After some years, the couple had a daughter.

After marriage, Asmita and Ajit grew closer

Later, Ajit Kumar was transferred to Karayparsurai in Nalanda, while Dev Kumar Gunjan was posted at Malaypur in Jamui. In 2023, Asmita was selected as a Motor Vehicle Inspector in the Bihar government and was posted in Supaul. During this period, her closeness with Ajit allegedly increased. Police said that despite being married, Asmita and Ajit allegedly continued their relationship. Dev Kumar had allegedly become an obstacle in their relationship, following which the two decided to remove him from their way.
