1. Piyush Goyal to visit three countries
- Union Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Spain, Belgium and Finland from 13 to 17 July, leading a high-level business delegation.
- In Spain, he will attend a business roundtable with the Chamber of Commerce, CEOE and ICEX Spain Trade and Investment.
- Discussions will focus on automobiles, renewable energy, railways, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and food processing.
- In Belgium, Goyal will participate in the India-EU Business Roundtable, where talks will cover foreign investment, trade, sustainable technology and supply chains.
- In Finland, he will attend the India-Finland Business Roundtable on telecommunications, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, mobility and innovation.
- He will also visit leading organisations, including Nokia, KONE, Kemppi Group and VTT Technical Research Centre.
- The visit aims to strengthen cooperation in clean energy, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, healthcare, and gems and jewellery.

The purpose of Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit is to further strengthen India’s trade, investment and technology cooperation with Europe.

2. Linda Noskova wins Wimbledon women’s singles title
- On 12 July, Czech tennis player Linda Noskova won the 2026 Wimbledon women’s singles title, defeating Karolína Muchová in the final at Centre Court.
- Noskova received prize money of about ₹38.5 crore and will rise to a career-high world No. 7.
- Earlier Czech champions include Markéta Vondroušová (2023) and Barbora Krejčíková (2024).

Linda Noskova has become the third Czech player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title in the last four years.
3. Animesh Kujur becomes fastest Indian overseas in 100m
- On 12 July, Animesh Kujur clocked 10.14 seconds in the 100m at the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger in Germany, becoming the fastest Indian to run the event overseas.
- The 23-year-old bettered his own overseas record.
- His time is the second-fastest in Indian history, behind Gurindervir Singh’s national record of 10.09 seconds.
- Kujur has qualified for India’s 100m and 200m teams for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and will next train in Spala, Poland, before the Glasgow Games.
- The men’s 100m world record of 9.58 seconds is held by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, set in 2009.

4. Kranti Gaud enters Lord’s Honours Board
- On 12 July, Kranti Gaud became the first Indian woman to be named on the Lord’s Honours Board after taking five wickets against England.
- She claimed 5/37 in 17 overs in the first innings.
- Bowlers who take a five-wicket haul at Lord’s earn a place on the Honours Board.
- At 22 years and 333 days, Gaud became the youngest Indian woman to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket, surpassing Jhulan Goswami’s record.
- It was also the first five-wicket haul by a pace bowler in a women’s Test in England since 2015, during the first women’s Test ever played at Lord’s.

Kranti also became the youngest bowler to take 5 wickets in Test cricket.
DEATH
5. Playback singer S. Janaki passes away
- Veteran playback singer S. Janaki died on 11 July at the age of 88.
- The news of her death was announced on 12 July.
- She recorded more than 48,000 songs in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam during a career that began in 1957.
- Her first Hindi song was for the 1958 film Miss 58.
- She was known for songs such as “Bol Baby Bol” (Meri Jung), “Prabhu More Avgun” (Sur Sangam), “O Maria” (Saagar) and “Gopala Gopala” (Humse Hai Muqabala).
- Janaki received four National Film Awards and several state honours.
- In 2013, she declined the Padma Bhushan, saying South Indian artistes often receive national recognition too late.

6. NTPC’s Lara Thermal Power Project approved
- On 12 July, the Centre approved a ₹20,457 crore expansion of NTPC’s Lara Thermal Power Project in Chhattisgarh.
- The project will develop the 1,600 MW Lara Super Thermal Power Station (Stage II) using ultra-supercritical technology, which is more efficient and emits less carbon than conventional coal-based plants.
- Founded on 7 November 1975, NTPC is a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Power.
- Headquartered in New Delhi, it is India’s largest power producer, generating electricity from coal, gas, hydro, solar and wind sources.

- In 1830, Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Alexander Duff started Scottish Church College in Kolkata with five students.
- In 1931, 22 protesters who raised their voice against Maharaja Hari Singh in Kashmir were killed outside the jail. This day is celebrated as ‘Kashmir Martyrs’ Day’.
