A 30-year-old woman who went missing from north Kolkata after leaving home for a promised job in Tamil Nadu has allegedly contacted her family from a hospital in Bangladesh, claiming she was abducted and trafficked across the international border.

The woman, identified as Madhumita Mistri Mondal, is originally from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas. Following marital disputes, she had been living with her brother, Dipankar Mistri, at Galiff Street under Shyampukur police station, along with her child.

Left home after accepting job offer

According to her brother, Madhumita had come in contact with a man through social media who allegedly offered her a well-paying job at a workshop in Tamil Nadu. Believing the offer to be genuine, she left Kolkata on July 1 to join work.

After leaving home, her communication with the family became irregular before her mobile phone was switched off completely.

Call from Bangladesh after 17 days

Seventeen days later, on July 18, Dipankar received a phone call from an international number beginning with +880, the country code for Bangladesh.

According to him, the caller was his sister, speaking in a weak voice from a hospital in Gopalganj, Bangladesh.

Brother, please bring me back. I am in Bangladesh. Some people kidnapped me, forcibly took me across the international border, and I somehow managed to escape,

she allegedly told him.

Dipankar said the call was made using the mobile phone of another patient’s family member at the hospital.

Family alleges international human trafficking

Following the call, Dipankar approached the Shyampukur Police Station and sought immediate intervention. He alleged that an interstate and international human trafficking racket was behind his sister’s disappearance and claimed he was initially advised to approach another police station before his complaint was recorded.

He has also submitted representations to the West Bengal Director General of Police, CID Additional Director General, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Kolkata Police Commissioner, and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking urgent action.

Police register trafficking, kidnapping case

Meanwhile, Madhumita’s husband has also filed a complaint at Sandeshkhali Police Station.

Police sources said a case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for kidnapping by deception and human trafficking. Investigators are collecting CCTV footage from the area, examining the victim’s travel route, call detail records, and financial transactions to trace her movement and identify those involved.

Police are also exploring whether assistance from central investigative agencies will be required, given the alleged cross-border dimension of the case.
