Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee has served a ₹10 crore legal notice on senior party leader Madan Mitra, accusing him of making false, fabricated, and defamatory allegations during a Facebook Live broadcast on July 19, 2026.

₹10 crore notice served to Mitra

The legal notice, issued by advocate Shrobana Sengupta, alleges that Mitra, during a 7-minute 57-second live video streamed from his verified Facebook page, described Abhishek Banerjee as a “criminal”, “murderer,” and alleged that he got people killed through “supari” (contract killing). The notice claims the allegations are “demonstrably false, malicious and entirely devoid of factual foundation” and have caused serious damage to the MP’s reputation and political standing.

Defamation allegations over Facebook Live remarks

The notice further alleges that the live broadcast was part of a “premeditated and coordinated conspiracy” to malign Abhishek Banerjee. It points to a remark made by Mitra near the end of the broadcast, “Anything more?”, claiming it suggests he may have been acting on instructions from or in coordination with others.

Notice alleges coordinated conspiracy against Abhishek

Abhishek Banerjee has demanded that Madan Mitra immediately stop making or circulating any defamatory statements against him, issue a public written and video apology, and pay ₹10 crore as compensation within 72 hours. According to the notice, the compensation amount would be placed in a registered trust to fund legal proceedings against defected Trinamool MPs and MLAs and provide assistance to alleged victims of political violence.

Internal TMC feud escalates through legal battle

The notice warns that if Mitra fails to comply within the stipulated time, Abhishek Banerjee will initiate both civil and criminal legal proceedings against him and any other individuals found to have participated in publishing or disseminating the allegedly defamatory content.
