In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Anand Kumar died by suicide after struggling with the pressure and repeated setbacks in securing a government job. The 23-year-old, from Gujaini in Kanpur, completed his BTech in Electrical Engineering from PSIT College in 2024. He had secured third rank in the state.

Attempted 50 government job exams

On 13 August 2024, Governor Anandiben Patel honoured him with a gold medal for his achievement. Anand was also a college topper. He was working at a private company but was dissatisfied with the job. His dream was to secure a government job. He reportedly attempted around 50 government recruitment exams but was unsuccessful.

Wrote ‘Sorry’ in suicide note

Anand left a note for his family before taking the extreme step. It read: “I tried 50 times to get a government job but could not succeed. Papa, please forgive me… Sorry.”

Anand’s elder brother and sister are government school teachers in Bihar. His father retired from a private company. At the time of the incident, his father and other family members had travelled to Bihar to finalise the elder son’s marriage. They had asked Anand to accompany them, but he declined.

Body found hanging after door was forced open

Anand was alone at home. When the domestic worker arrived in the morning and received no response despite repeatedly calling out, she informed the family and the Govind Nagar police. After reaching the house and forcing open the door, police found Anand’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. His family rushed back to Kanpur from Bihar after being informed.

Police send body for post-mortem

When police reached the house and forced open the door, they found Anand’s body hanging from a noose. The body was taken into custody and sent for a post-mortem examination. Anand’s mother, Shanti Devi, had died of an illness in 2011.

Umesh died by suicide before the NEET re-examination

On 16 June 2026, 22-year-old Umesh Mali, a resident of Sikar, Rajasthan, died by suicide after hanging himself in his flat. He was due to appear for the NEET re-examination on 21 June. This would have been his third attempt.

Father works as a tile contractor

Umesh was originally from Nawalgarh in Jhunjhunu district. His father, Laxmanram, works as a tile contractor in Mumbai and had rented a flat in Sikar for his children’s education. Umesh lived there with his mother, elder sister and younger brother.

Returned to the flat a day earlier

Umesh returned to Sikar on Monday morning after dropping his mother at their village. According to reports, he was alone in the flat when he died by suicide at around 2.30 pm.

When his elder sister and younger brother returned home later that afternoon, they found him. Neighbours gathered after hearing their cries and informed the Udyog Nagar police. During the investigation, police recovered a suicide note from Umesh’s room. It read, “I am going very far away. I don’t know where I am going. Sorry…”
