A Class 10 student was murdered after she was attacked with a knife by a youth on a busy road in Howrah’s Andul on Wednesday evening. The incident triggered panic in the area, while the accused was caught by locals and beaten up before being handed over to the police.
School student attacked in public
The incident took place at Chandanibagan in Khatirbazar, Andul. According to police and local sources, the accused allegedly attacked the girl with a knife in full public view, leaving her bleeding on the road.
Victim died during treatment
The victim, identified as Ritika Samanta, a resident of Andul and a Class 10 student of Gramya Hitakari Girls’ School, was rushed to Howrah Hospital in critical condition. Despite treatment, she later succumbed to her injuries.
Love angle emerges during investigation
Bystanders immediately overpowered the accused and assaulted him before informing the Domjur Police Station. Police reached the spot, rescued the injured accused from the mob and took him into custody. An investigation has been initiated.
Domjur police probe motive behind attack
The accused has been identified as Samir Das, a resident of Birbhum who works at Jalan Complex in the area. He also sustained serious injuries in the assault by locals and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Preliminary findings suggest the attack may have stemmed from a dispute over a romantic relationship, with investigators suspecting the assault followed an alleged rejection. However, police said the exact motive is yet to be established, and the investigation is underway.
