Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed, and another was injured after a fellow jawan allegedly opened fire inside a BSF camp in West Bengal’s Malda district on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Three BSF personnel suffer bullet injuries
The incident took place at around 3:50 pm at the headquarters of the 119th and 71st Battalions in Baishnabnagar. According to officials, the accused, identified as Constable Shivam Kumar Mishra of the 119th Battalion, was under court martial and in BSF custody at the time of the incident.
Two jawans declared dead at hospital
Preliminary information suggests that Mishra allegedly overpowered a sentry, snatched his service rifle, and opened fire towards a nearby barrack, hitting three BSF personnel.
The injured jawans were immediately rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital for treatment. However, Head Constable Ajay Kumar and Constable Ambadar Suresh, both from the 71st Battalion, succumbed to their injuries. Head Constable Bikas Brahma, who also sustained bullet injuries, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Police detain accused, launch detailed investigation
Following the incident, the accused was overpowered and detained. Police have launched an investigation, and a case is being registered under relevant sections of law.
Officials said the exact motive behind the firing is yet to be established. However, preliminary inputs indicate that the accused may have been suffering from mental depression. Authorities are investigating all possible angles, including the circumstances that led to the firing and how the accused managed to seize the weapon despite being in custody.
