A brief exchange of fire broke out between police and suspected terrorists in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday afternoon. The gunfight began after the attackers opened fire on a police team.
According to officials, the attackers opened fire on police personnel on duty at around 12:30 pm, prompting security forces to return fire.
Head Constable Aashiq Hussain was seriously injured after being shot during the attack. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Officials said his condition remains critical.
Following the attack, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, and other security agencies cordoned off Lal Chowk and the surrounding area. Additional security personnel were deployed, and a large-scale search operation was launched to trace the attackers.
All roads leading into the area have been sealed, with security forces carrying out extensive checks on vehicles and pedestrians. Officials are trying to establish how many terrorists were involved in the attack and the route they used to escape.
