Congress MP Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, got stuck in a hotel lift. The incident occurred on Friday evening when Tharoor arrived to attend the installation event of the Rotary Club of Trivandrum East.
Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived at the scene to rescue the Congress MP stuck in the lift, opened the lift door using a hydraulic spreader, and safely brought him out.
According to fire station officials, information was received at 7:37 PM that Shashi Tharoor was stuck in the hotel lift. Immediately after, the rescue team reached the spot.
Tharoor smiled and said ‘Thank you’ upon coming out
Initially, hotel staff and lift mechanics tried to open the lift, but the door did not open. After this, the rescue team used a spreader. By 7:51 PM, everyone was safely brought out. It was reported that the lift had not fully reached its designated floor, due to which its doors could not open.
After exiting the lift, Shashi Tharoor was seen smiling. Thanking the Fire and Rescue personnel, he said, “Thank you all. You did a great job.”
What is a Hydraulic Spreader
A hydraulic spreader is a special rescue tool powered by hydraulic pressure. It is used by fire brigades and rescue teams in situations where a person needs to be safely extracted from a trapped location.
It has two strong metal jaws at the front. With the help of hydraulic pressure, these jaws slowly spread apart. This creates a safe space between things like lift doors, car doors, or metal sheets, allowing the trapped person to get out.
It is commonly used when lift doors are closed, car doors are jammed in road accidents, to rescue people trapped in debris after a building collapse, and to open metal structures in industrial accidents.
