The Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate, widely known as CUET UG, could see major changes in its 2027 examination pattern. The National Testing Agency and the University Grants Commission are reportedly considering a revised format that could allow students to complete their selected CUET papers on a single day. The reported proposal also includes shorter examination papers, fewer questions and a possible limit of four subjects for candidates. The changes have not yet been officially confirmed by the National Testing Agency.
One-student-one-day model under consideration
Under the reported proposal, a student could complete all selected CUET papers on one allotted examination day. The overall CUET examination could continue across several days, but individual candidates may not need to visit examination centres on multiple dates. This could reduce travel and accommodation difficulties for students appearing from cities away from their home locations. The proposed model could also make examination scheduling easier for students and families.
Shorter examination duration
Another major reported change involves the duration of individual papers. The current CUET UG 2026 format provides 60 minutes for a paper containing 50 compulsory questions. Under the proposed 2027 model, the examination duration could be reduced to around 40 to 45 minutes. The number of questions could also come down to approximately 35 to 40. A shorter paper would require students to manage their time efficiently because fewer minutes would be available for each examination.
Possible four-subject limit
The reported proposal also includes a possible limit of four subjects for CUET UG candidates. A reduced subject-selection limit could simplify the examination structure and reduce the number of papers students need to prepare for. Students choosing subjects for university admission would need to pay closer attention to eligibility requirements of individual undergraduate programmes. The final rules will become important because different universities and courses may have different subject combinations.
Changes could reduce travel pressure
CUET is conducted on a large scale across India, and students from different states often travel to examination centres. A one-day format could reduce repeated travel, accommodation expenses and logistical difficulties. This could particularly benefit students from smaller towns and rural areas who travel to larger cities for competitive examinations. At the same time, examination authorities would need to ensure that the new scheduling system is capable of handling large numbers of students without creating technical or administrative problems.
Students should wait for official notification
The reported changes remain under consideration and have not been formally confirmed by NTA.
Students preparing for CUET 2027 should therefore continue following the existing official examination information until a revised notification is released. A change in examination duration or question count could influence preparation strategies, but students should avoid changing their preparation plans based only on unofficial reports.
CUET remains important for university admissions
CUET has become an important entrance examination for undergraduate admissions across participating central and other universities. Changes to its structure can therefore affect a large number of Class 12 students and their families. The proposed changes appear focused on making the examination more manageable and reducing the logistical burden on candidates. The final CUET UG 2027 notification will provide clarity on the examination pattern, number of subjects, duration, question count, eligibility requirements and other admission-related rules. Until that notification is issued, students should treat the reported format as a proposal rather than a confirmed examination structure.
