The City Sessions Court in Kolkata is set to get two dedicated courtrooms exclusively for cases investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The new courtrooms are expected to become operational by August 10.
Exclusive NIA courtrooms coming to Kolkata
Until now, NIA cases have been heard in the court of the Chief Judge of the City Sessions Court. With the increasing number of cases, separate courtrooms are now being established exclusively for NIA matters.
Chief Judge no longer hears cases
According to sources, two rooms on the fifth floor of the City Sessions Court are being converted into dedicated NIA courtrooms. In addition, two separate office rooms are also being set up on the same floor to support NIA operations.
NIA appoints judges and additional lawyers
From August 10, all NIA cases will be heard exclusively in these two designated courtrooms.
To facilitate the new arrangement, the NIA is expected to appoint two judges and 10 additional lawyers. The legal team will function under the supervision of a senior advocate of the rank of Additional Solicitor General (ASG).
Infrastructure work underway before official launch
Work to install the required infrastructure, including furniture, desks, chairs, and other courtroom facilities, is being carried out on a war footing to ensure the courtrooms are ready before the scheduled launch.
