Atiq Ahmed’s youngest son, Aban Ahmed (21), died in a road accident this morning (6 Aug) while travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet his elder brother Ali, who is lodged in Jhansi Jail. Four of his friends were travelling with him in a Creta SUV.
Crash leaves two dead, three injured
The accident occurred around 10.30 am in the Poonch police station area, nearly 70 km before Jhansi. The speeding SUV rammed into a road divider with such force that its front portion was completely mangled. All five occupants were trapped inside the vehicle.
Police and passersby broke open the doors to rescue the victims. Aban, who was seated in the front passenger seat, and the driver, Sonu, died at the scene. The three injured occupants, Umar Ahmed, Mohammad Zaid and Aslam, were shifted to the district hospital for treatment.
Conflicting accounts on cause of accident
Two versions have emerged regarding the cause of the crash. One of the injured occupants told police that the vehicle lost control after hitting bricks lying on the highway.
However police said, “The SUV was travelling at high speed and the driver lost control while trying to avoid an animal that suddenly came onto the road.”
Atiq Ahmed’s family
Atiq Ahmed had five sons, with Aban being the youngest. His son Asad was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi in 2023. Of his surviving sons, Umar is lodged in Lucknow Jail, Ali is imprisoned in Jhansi Jail, while Ahzam, who is older than Aban, is currently pursuing graduation.
Family remains under legal scrutiny
The family has remained in the spotlight since the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal in February 2023. During the investigation, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were brought to Prayagraj for a court hearing from separate jails and were shot dead in police custody on April 15, 2023.
Atiq’s wife, Shaista Parveen, remains absconding, with a reward of ₹1 lakh announced for information leading to her arrest.

Aban suffered fatal head injuries in high-speed crash
Police said, “Atiq Ahmed’s youngest son, Aban Ahmed, left Prayagraj early morning for Jhansi, nearly 400 km away, to meet his brother lodged in jail. He was seated in the front passenger seat, while Zaid was driving the SUV.”
SUV crashes into divider at high speed
According to Jhansi Police sources, “The highway was wet due to light rain and the vehicle was reportedly travelling at nearly 100 kmph. The driver allegedly lost control, and the SUV slammed into the divider at full speed, completely crushing its front portion.”
Severe impact proved fatal
The collision left Aban with critical head injuries and multiple fractures to his arms and legs. He died on the spot. Police broke open the vehicle’s doors to rescue all five occupants trapped inside the wreckage.
Body sent for post-mortem
Aban’s body has been kept at the post-mortem house of Jhansi Medical College. After the post-mortem examination, the body will be handed over to his family. He is expected to be buried in Prayagraj on Friday near the grave of his father, Atiq Ahmed.
Eyewitness says SUV was speeding before crash
An eyewitness named Deepak Yadav claimed, “The SUV was travelling at a very high speed before crashing into the divider, with debris from the impact scattered across the highway.”
He stated, “I was on my way to the farm when I saw the accident. The driver first swerved left to avoid a calf crossing the highway. Moments later, he allegedly turned the vehicle sharply again to avoid a motorcyclist, after which the SUV crashed into the divider.”
Car parts scattered across 40 feet
Deepak said, “The vehicle was travelling at over 120 kmph. The impact was so severe that pieces of the SUV were scattered across nearly 40 feet of the highway.”
Locals rescued victims before police arrived
Deepak said, “I was the first to reach the spot after hearing the crash. When the car doors could not be opened, I called the police and fetched an iron rod from a nearby house to force the doors open.”
He said, “Aban was pulled out first and had blood in his mouth. When asked his name, he identified himself as Aban. The remaining occupants, including Sonu, were then rescued from the vehicle.”
Police reached within 10 minutes
According to the eyewitness, police arrived at the scene within about 10 minutes of being informed and shifted all the injured occupants to the hospital for treatment.
