Artificial intelligence (AI) is making it easier than ever to create realistic fake videos, raising serious concerns about misinformation online. The latest case involves Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who has alleged that an AI-generated deepfake video falsely altered his comments made outside Parliament. Calling it a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, Goyal filed a police complaint, following which an FIR was registered in Delhi.
What happened?
On Saturday, Piyush Goyal said that a video circulating on social media had been manipulated using AI to change the meaning of his remarks to the media outside Parliament.
Sharing the update on X, the Union Minister said the fake video was created to spread misinformation and mislead people.

Police register FIR
Goyal said he lodged a police complaint, and an FIR was registered at Chanakyapuri Police Station in New Delhi at 4:35 a.m. on July 25.
He added that authorities would take strict legal action against everyone involved in creating, sharing, or promoting the alleged deepfake video.
The irresponsible misuse of artificial intelligence to mislead the public cannot and will not be tolerated.
Government dismisses viral video
The government also rejected the claims made in the viral clip. According to officials, the video falsely suggested that Goyal had made threatening remarks against students protesting in Delhi.
Authorities clarified that the circulating video had been manipulated and did not reflect the minister’s actual statements.

Goyal urged people not to trust unverified content on social media and instead rely only on authentic and verified sources for information.
He also expressed confidence that people, especially young Indians who are familiar with technology, would not be misled by such AI-generated content.
I have complete faith that India’s aware and tech-savvy citizens, especially our youth, will not fall prey to such misinformation.
Why deepfakes are a growing concern
Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to create highly realistic fake videos, images, or audio recordings that can make it appear as though someone said or did something they never actually did. As these tools become more advanced and widely available, governments and experts are increasingly warning about their potential to spread misinformation, influence public opinion, and damage reputations.
