1. Warfare Shallow Watercraft Machilipatnam inducted into Navy
- On 31 July, the Navy announced the launch of Warfare Shallow Watercraft Machilipatnam (BY 529).
- It has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and is the seventh of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW SWC).
- This is a Mahe Class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).
- This ship has been named after the historic city of Machilipatnam located in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.
- The Navy said that this ship reflects the historical spirit and heritage of Machilipatnam, while also strengthening its commitment to protecting the country’s maritime interests.
- Machilipatnam is designed for coastal and near-shore operations.
- This ship can perform tasks such as underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare missions, low-speed maritime operations, and mine warfare.
- After commissioning, it will strengthen the Navy’s coastal security capabilities and significantly enhance Maritime Domain Awareness.
- Vice Admiral Atul Anand was present as the chief guest at this event.
- The Navy said that this launching has achieved another important milestone in the direction of completing the ASW SWC Project.

Machilipatnam was launched by Gulrukh Anand, Additional Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs.
2. Patanjali gets approval to buy stake in Magma General Insurance
- On 30 July, Patanjali Ayurved and Dharampal Satyapal (DS) Group received approval from insurance regulator IRDAI to purchase stake in Magma General Insurance.
- The company informed about this in a stock exchange filing. This deal was worth 4,500 crore rupees.
- IRDAI has given green signal to this acquisition through a letter dated 28 July 2026.
- This approval letter will remain valid for the next 3 months from the date of issuance, during which signing will be mandatory.
- Under this deal, Patanjali Ayurved will purchase 73.6% stake, while Dharampal Satyapal Group will purchase 24.5% stake.
- After receiving IRDAI’s approval, Patanjali will now become the promoter company of Magma General Insurance.
- Meanwhile, DS Group will play the role of co-investor in this company.
- According to reports, Patanjali may invest further to strengthen the company’s growth and solvency.
- IRDAI’s approval will remain valid for three months from the date of issuance.
- During this period, the buyer group will have to complete the share transfer process and fulfill all regulatory conditions.
- Magma General Insurance (formerly Magma HDI) is a leading Indian general insurance company that provides products such as motor, health, and home insurance.
IRDAI
- The full form of IRDAI is Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.
- IRDAI was established in 1999 (under the IRDA Act, 1999).
- It is the insurance regulator in India.
- Just as RBI controls banks, similarly IRDAI supervises insurance companies.
- IRDAI’s headquarters is in Hyderabad, Telangana.
- The Chairman of IRDAI is Debasish Panda.

After the deal, Patanjali will become the promoter company of Magma General Insurance.
INTERNATIONAL 3. US Treasury Department bans ‘Skiez Travels’
- On 31 July, the US Treasury Department (OFAC) has sanctioned the Indian entity ‘Skiez Travels’ in the United States.
- Along with this, the US has also imposed sanctions on 6 companies from China, Russia, and Iran.
- These companies have been banned on charges of supporting Iran’s aviation company ‘Mahan Air’ and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
- All these companies were working as sales agents or logistics partners for Mahan Air.
- All assets of these entities coming to the United States have been blocked.
- Under this sanction, American citizens and companies cannot do business with these institutions.
- OFAC is the US agency that enforces economic sanctions. OFAC has included Skiez Travels in its sanctions list.
- The allegation is that the company assisted in Iran-related prohibited activities or transactions, which was considered a violation of US sanctions.
- Skiez Travels has been working as a General Sales Agent for Iran’s Mahan Airways since 2020.
- Iran-based ‘Dadenegar Startup Studio’ has been accused of operating as a front organisation for IRGC and gathering intelligence on US and Israeli locations.

- It was established on 27 November 2020.

Skiez Travels has been working as General Sales Agent for Iran’s Mahan Airways since 2020.

4. 135th ‘Durand Cup’ Football Tournament inaugurated in Shillong
- On 31 July, Asia’s oldest football tournament was inaugurated in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.
- This is the 135th edition of the Durand Cup and the Group-E matches began at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Polo Ground) in Shillong.
- This group includes three football clubs from Meghalaya: Shillong Lajong, Nongkseh Sports, Social and Cultural Club, and Langsning Football Club.
- Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma participated in the opening ceremony.
- The cup will be played until 23 August and 24 teams are participating in it.
- All these teams have been divided into six different groups. The semi-finals will be played on 19 and 20 August, while the final will be held in Kolkata on 23 August.

In this event, the Indian Armed Forces have set up an exhibition of weapons and equipment, which will be opened to the public from 3 August.
4. The country’s first telecom manufacturing zone will be established
- On 30 July, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) signed an MoU with the Madhya Pradesh government in New Delhi.
- Under this MoU, India’s first Telecom Manufacturing Zone Phase-I (TMZ) will be established in Gwalior.
- The objective of this initiative is to create a world-class manufacturing ecosystem for telecom equipment and related technology.
- This MoU will help promote telecom manufacturing in the country and increase investment.
- This will strengthen the supply chain and enable India to establish itself as a global hub for telecom manufacturing and innovation
- To encourage the manufacturing of 5G, 6G, optical fiber, networking equipment and other telecommunications hardware.
- On this historic occasion, Dr. Chandrashekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, was prominently present.
- During this MoU ceremony, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and Dr. Chandra Shekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications, were present.
