Dr Surajeet Kumar Patra, a Senior Consultant Diabetologist from Bhubaneswar with more than two decades of experience in healthcare, has been nominated for the Bharat Shreshtha Ratna Sanman at the India Republic Times – Leadership Conclave Mumbai 2026. The recognition highlights his work in diabetes care, metabolic health, medical research and public health awareness.
Dr Patra is associated with Apollo Sugar Clinics, Bhubaneswar, and also leads Dr Surajeet Patra’s Diabetes Clinic. With qualifications including MBBS and MD, he is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Senior Fellow of the International Diabetes Federation, Fellow of Diabetes India and Fellow of the Indian Society of Chronomedicine. His professional journey has focused on clinical diabetes management while also contributing to medical education and awareness.
Research and medical writing form an important part of Dr Patra’s professional work. He has authored more than 30 publications and research articles in national and international medical journals and has participated as a faculty member and speaker at several national and international conferences. He also authored Chapter 16 on LADA in the 5th Edition of the RSSDI Textbook of Diabetes Mellitus, published in 2022. LADA, or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, is a form of diabetes that requires specific clinical understanding and management.
In 2026, Dr Patra also contributed as an author to the Indian Society of Hypertension’s National Guidelines on Home BP Monitoring in India, published in March. The contribution reflects his involvement beyond diabetes management and into broader areas of metabolic and cardiovascular health. He was also honoured with the DOSTI Young Achiever recognition at DOSTICON 2026, the National Diabesity Conclave held in Nagpur, for his contributions to diabetes care. Earlier, in 2022, he received the Diabetes India recognition for his contribution to diabetes care under challenging conditions.
Public awareness is another significant part of Dr Patra’s work. He has organised health camps and participated in television and radio broadcasts aimed at improving public understanding of diabetes management. His message to patients and the wider public focuses on maintaining metabolic health by paying attention to what he describes as the “ABC” of diabetes care — A1c, blood pressure and cholesterol. He also stresses that medicines are only one part of diabetes treatment and that lifestyle management, weight management and adherence to treatment play an important role in long-term care.
Dr Patra is now preparing to expand his healthcare services through a new advanced Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolic Clinic in Bhubaneswar in collaboration with Apollo Sugar Clinics. According to the profile shared for the nomination, the proposed facility will focus on diabetes and obesity care, including A1c, blood pressure and cholesterol management, along with lifestyle interventions covering diet, exercise, stress management, sleep hygiene, medication and medication adherence. The clinic also plans to introduce annual membership facilities and healthcare and metabolic health classes for the general public.
The broader mission behind this initiative is to make diabetes and metabolic healthcare more accessible, available and affordable while working towards reducing the burden of complications associated with conditions such as diabetes and obesity. With his clinical experience, research contributions, public awareness initiatives and continuing focus on metabolic healthcare, Dr Surajeet Kumar Patra’s nomination brings attention to a medical professional working across patient care, knowledge sharing and community health.
