Asmita Dey Wins Gold in Judo

Ghaziabad’s Sub-Inspector Asmita Dey won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games-2026 on Friday. She defeated a Canadian player in judo. Asmita Dey is a resident of Tripura and is a Sub-Inspector in the UP Police.

After winning the gold, Asmita Dey said, “I am in the UP Police. I want to thank CM Yogi ji because he gave me a job in the UP Police. This job gave me support. It is because of this that I reached here and was able to win the gold medal.”

Before going to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Ghaziabad Police Commissioner J. Ravinder Gaud had encouraged her with best wishes.

Initially trailed, then made a spectacular comeback

The start of the final match was not easy for Asmita Dey. Canada’s Hady Quach took an early lead by scoring a yuko point. Asmita also received a shido penalty. Despite this, she did not give up and made a brilliant comeback to level the score at 1-1.

No player could score a decisive point until the stipulated time, so the match went into golden score. Here, Asmita made a brilliant move at the right moment and scored a second yuko point, winning both the match and the gold medal.

Before reaching the final, Asmita had put up a brilliant performance by defeating Scotland’s Eva Ewing and Summer Shaw.

Asmita said – Yogi ji’s support gave me strength

Asmita said – Her father passed away in December 2025. My father always supported me. After he left, I felt like everything was over. But two months later, the Asian Games trials took place, in which I secured the first position at the national level.

After winning the gold medal, Asmita Dey said – This medal is very important for me, my state, and my country. I dedicate it to my coach and my father. I am very happy with this gold medal. This is for all those people who supported me. She also thanked CM Yogi.

Chose Judo over 800-meter race

Asmita Dey, a resident of Belonia, Tripura, was initially an 800-meter runner. During a district-level trial, her interest in Judo grew. After that, she left athletics and made Judo her sport, continuously working hard.

Asmita trained under the supervision of coach Yashpal Solanki at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Regional Centre in Bhopal. Currently, she is part of the Development Group of the central government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and is representing India at the international level.

Had to stay hungry to maintain weight

Asmita also shared the struggle of random weigh-in (weight check) before the championship match. She said that she had to stay hungry in the morning. She said she couldn’t eat much because, in a random weigh-in, as the weight should be less than 50 kg.

When she woke up in the morning, her weight was 50 kg 300 grams and so she didn’t eat anything. When her name came up for the random weigh-in, only then did she eat and drink after the formality was completed, and her fight was just one hour after that.

DGP said – Asmita enhanced the pride of UP Police and the country

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna congratulated Asmita Dey on winning the gold medal. He said that Asmita Dey has brought glory to UP Police, the state and the entire country by winning gold in the women’s 48 kg judo event.

This is an excellent example of their success, discipline, hard work, and determination. This achievement is also a result of CM Yogi’s policy of promoting sports talents. By providing jobs to players in UP Police through sports quota, they have got an opportunity to excel in both sports and service.

India in 10th Position in Commonwealth Games

India’s performance in the Commonwealth Games 2026 is continuously improving. So far, Indian players have won 23 medals, including five gold, 10 silver, and six bronze medals. With this performance, India has reached the ninth position in the medal tally.
