Today marks seven years since Article 370 was revoked from Jammu and Kashmir. On 5 August 2019, Articles 370 and 35A were scrapped after receiving the President’s approval.
Even after seven years, separatist groups in Kashmir continue to raise the issue. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti held a candle march on Tuesday and appealed to people to protest on 5 August.
In view of Mehbooba’s appeal and the recent terror incidents, the Jammu and Kashmir Police issued a public advisory banning all protests and rallies without prior permission.
Police warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone violating the order. Security forces also carried out late-night flag marches in border villages and other sensitive areas, while surveillance along the Line of Control (LoC) has been intensified.

Police appeal: Maintain peace, report suspicious activities
In its advisory, the Kashmir Police said extensive security arrangements have been put in place to maintain peace, public order and safety. The police urged all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, maintain peace and communal harmony, and avoid spreading rumours.
The police also appealed to people to immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
Officials considering action against Mehbooba
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police and administrative officials are considering legal action against PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.
The issue relates to the alleged improper display of the national flag. Displaying the flag with the colours in the wrong order, incorrect proportions, or using a damaged flag are all violations of the Flag Code of India.
Under the rules, the top stripe must always be saffron, the middle white stripe must carry the navy-blue Ashoka Chakra with 24 spokes, and the bottom stripe must be green.
