Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a senior IPS officer, was found dead inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on Monday in a suspected case of suicide.

According to preliminary information, Dhankar was found hanging inside his office. He was immediately rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12:48 pm. Senior doctor Dr Pradip Bhowmik of GBP Hospital confirmed that the Tripura DGP was brought to the hospital but could not be revived.

Following the incident, senior police officials rushed to the Police Headquarters, and the premises were secured as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding his death.
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the cause of death. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause, while police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre who took charge as the state’s police chief in May 2025. Before he was appointed DGP, he served as the Director General of Police (Intelligence), Tripura.

Veteran IPS officer led Tripura Police force
During his career, Dhankar spent nearly 16 years in Tripura, holding several key positions in the state’s police force. Among his notable assignments was serving as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) between 2013 and 2016, where he played a significant role in maintaining public order and overseeing policing operations.

CBI officer investigated high-profile Nirav Modi case
Recognised for his investigative expertise, Dhankar also served with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and was part of the team that led the probe into the high-profile Nirav Modi bank fraud case, one of India’s most prominent financial crime investigations. His long tenure in Tripura and experience in both intelligence and criminal investigations made him one of the state’s most senior and respected police officers.
