A robbery straight out of the Bollywood film Special 26 unfolded in south Kolkata after a gang posing as police officers allegedly looted ₹2 crore from a businessman’s office on Pratapaditya Road. Police have since arrested two accused and recovered ₹25 lakh in cash as the investigation gathers pace.

Fake detectives execute daring office robbery

According to investigators, the accused entered the businessman’s office on Friday, posing as police detectives conducting a raid based on intelligence that a large amount of unaccounted cash was being stored on the premises. They allegedly flashed fake police identity cards before confiscating the mobile phones of the businessman and his employees to prevent them from contacting anyone.

Businessman loses ₹2 crore during raid

The gang then questioned the staff about the cash kept in the office and allegedly learned that the money was stored inside a vault. They forced the employees to open the vault before fleeing with ₹2 crore in cash.

First accused leads police to cash

It was only after contacting the local police that the businessman and his employees realised they had been duped by impostors. A case was subsequently registered at Tollygunge Police Station, and an investigation was launched.

Second accused arrested after overnight operation

During the probe, police arrested Surajit Ghosh (48), a resident of Jadavpur, on July 10 at around 10.30 pm. Based on his statement, investigators recovered ₹5 lakh in cash.

Acting on source information and technological inputs, police later arrested Chandan Mukherjee alias Sanjay Das (57) from Chhaya Neer Guest House under the Patuli Police Station area at around 2.05 am on July 13. He was identified by the first accused during the investigation.

Police recover ₹25 lakh during raids

Following Chandan Mukherjee’s arrest, police conducted a raid in the Golf Green area and recovered around ₹20 lakh in cash. With the latest seizure, the total recovery in the case has reached approximately ₹25 lakh.

Police said Surajit Ghosh is currently in police custody until July 17, while Chandan Mukherjee will be produced before the court with a plea seeking police custody for further interrogation.
