Delhi has been receiving continuous rainfall for the past four days. August 8 was the rainiest day in August in the last two years.
Delhi-NCR was battered by heavy rain in the first week of August, ending up recording its wettest first week of the month since 2011, with 127 mm of rainfall in the first 7 days of the month.
Delhi recorded 98.7 mm of rainfall on Saturday. The last time the city received such heavy rainfall in August was in 2024, when 100.6 mm of rain was recorded on the first day of the month.
Delhi has received a total of 225.7 mm of rainfall so far this August. The normal rainfall for the entire month is 233.1 mm. This means the city has received almost its normal monthly rainfall in just eight days.
Due to this, 18-year-old man went missing from southeast Delhi after he was swept away by rainwater in a drain while crossing it, with a large-scale operation underway by rescue teams, police said.
The incident took place on Friday evening near the Priyanka Camp Nala in Madanpur Khadar within the Sarita Vihar police station limits. The missing youth has been identified as Ankit, a resident of Bhim Colony, PTI news agency cited police as saying.
Apart from Delhi, a heavy rain alert has been issued for Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir has been suspended 20 days ahead of schedule. The decision was taken after continuous rain and landslides damaged the route.
The pilgrimage will continue only for the groups already on their way. No new groups will be sent. So far, more than 4.8 lakh devotees have visited the holy cave.
