The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal on Sunday claimed to have uncovered a suspected interstate arms trafficking network after arresting a woman and seizing a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition in North 24 Parganas district.
CID intercepts vehicle after intelligence input
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the CID and Ashoknagar Police intercepted a Magic goods vehicle on the Naihati-Ashoknagar Road near the 8 Number crossing in Ashoknagar on Sunday morning.
Woman arrested carrying illegal firearms cache
During the operation, the team detained a woman identified as Puja Biswas, a resident of Ward No. 12 under Habra Municipality. A search of a bag in her possession led to the recovery of six firearms, including four 7 mm pistols and two 9 mm pistols, 12 magazines, and nearly 200 rounds of live ammunition.
Investigators also recovered ₹12,000 in cash, two mobile phones, and a train ticket, which officials believe could establish links with Bihar.
Investigators suspect Bihar trafficking connection
According to CID sources, preliminary investigation suggests that the weapons were allegedly brought from Bihar for distribution in the Habra area. Investigators are probing a possible connection with the illegal arms manufacturing and trafficking network in Munger district of Bihar, which has long been under the radar of law enforcement agencies.
CID questions accused over wider network
The CID will interrogate the accused to determine the intended recipients of the weapons, identify potential buyers, and uncover others involved in the alleged interstate arms trafficking racket.
The operation caused a stir in the busy Ashoknagar locality as news of the seizure spread. A detailed investigation is underway to trace the broader network behind the arms supply.
