A horrific incident has been reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, where a 12-year-old boy was killed in a crocodile attack. The boy had gone to wash his hands and feet in the Ghaghra river after helping transplant paddy when the crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and clamped him in its jaws.
The child struggled to break free, while his uncle and nearby villagers desperately tried to rescue him by throwing bricks and stones at the reptile. However, the crocodile refused to let go, repeatedly dragged the boy underwater and eventually disappeared into deeper water with him.
Around five hours later, villagers recovered the child’s body from the river. One of his legs and part of his abdomen had been eaten. The incident took place in the Baundi police station area.
Station House Officer T.N. Maurya confirmed the incident and the viral video. He said the boy’s body was sent for post-mortem on Friday morning. The victim’s parents had died a few years ago. He was the only brother to three sisters and was a Class 6 student.

Boy attacked while washing after working in paddy field
According to villagers, Sunil had gone to a paddy field with his uncle, Vijay Raj Singh, at around 2 pm on Thursday to help with paddy transplantation. After working in the field for three to four hours, they stopped at the Ghaghra river while returning home to wash their hands and feet.
At that moment, a crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and seized Sunil.
Villagers tried to save him with bricks and sticks
Sunil’s uncle raised the alarm and called out to people working in nearby fields. Villagers rushed to the riverbank and hurled bricks, stones and sticks at the crocodile in an attempt to force it to release the child.
Despite their efforts, the reptile held on to the boy, dragged him further into the river and disappeared into deep water. After the attack, more villagers joined the search and used long bamboo poles to look for the child in the river.
Body recovered after five-hour search
After an extensive search lasting around five hours, villagers recovered Sunil’s body from the river. Police said one of his legs and part of his abdomen were missing, indicating the crocodile had partially consumed the body.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Family to receive ₹4 lakh compensation
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Prakash Singh said the administration had informed the concerned authorities about the incident. He added that the victim’s family would receive ₹4 lakh in financial assistance under the state’s disaster relief provisions.
