A memorable teacher is not always remembered for the lessons taught from a textbook. Often, it is the teacher who notices a child struggling, understands what lies behind the behaviour and patiently helps that child find a way forward. Ramya Sudha Vinukonda has built her teaching journey around this belief. A Biology teacher at ZPHS Rangampeta in Andhra Pradesh, she has spent 13 years making education more engaging through experimentation, activity based learning, personal mentorship and a strong commitment to giving government school students opportunities to excel.For Ramya Sudha, the classroom became a place of discovery soon after she entered the teaching profession. She realised that students needed more than academic instruction. Many needed someone who could listen, understand their circumstances and guide them with affection. She began treating her students as her own children, and they affectionately started calling her “Mom”. Students who were once irregular, arrogant or inattentive gradually began showing positive behavioural changes through her patient approach. Seeing some of these students go on to establish successful careers became one of the most rewarding aspects of her teaching journey.Her classroom philosophy is centred on making students active participants in learning. Rather than limiting Biology to theoretical explanations, she uses experiments, activities and hands on experiences to help students understand concepts in a practical manner.
This approach has encouraged children to develop curiosity and take greater interest in science. Her emphasis on innovation has also resulted in the development of 20 innovative ideas, along with a patent award during her teaching career.The achievements of her students demonstrate the reach of this approach. Under her guidance, students have won two international (Sakura Science Expo, Japan, Science Castle Asia, Malaysia), five national, six state and eleven district level science project competitions. These accomplishments have given government school students opportunities to compete on platforms beyond their immediate academic environment and demonstrate their scientific abilities.Her commitment to students became particularly significant during the COVID 19 pandemic.
When schools were forced to move away from conventional classroom teaching, Ramya Sudha conducted free online classes for government school students. Her efforts did not stop when schools reopened. She continues to conduct free online classes for competitive examinations, including the National Science Olympiad. Students guided by her have secured gold medals in national level Olympiads, reflecting the value of sustained academic support.Alongside teaching, Ramya Sudha has developed a strong interest in research and professional learning. She has participated in more than 10 national and international workshops, seminars and training programmes, expanding her understanding of new approaches to education and science. She has submitted more than 10 research papers at national and international levels and has received Best Research Paper Awards. Her research has been published in national and international journals, while she has also contributed Biology related educational content to publications such as Arihant, Darshan and Anuganga.Her passion for Biology and education has also found expression through writing. She is the author of The Essence of Biology, a book that received the International Best Author Award in Vietnam. The recognition reflects her efforts to take scientific knowledge beyond the classroom and make it available through another medium.
Education, in Ramya Sudha’s view, also carries a responsibility towards society. She contributes food, books and money to children with special needs and orphaned children. Her social contribution is accompanied by a strong environmental focus. As a National Green Corps teacher, she conducts eco friendly activities and awareness programmes aimed at encouraging students to protect nature. Her practical initiatives include making banana sanitary napkins, ragi tea cups, clay water bottles, bird nests and eco friendly colours for Holi.Her dedication has earned her more than 15 awards from different organisations. Among her recognitions are the National Best Science Teacher Award from CV Raman Science Society at Science Centre, Ahmedabad, the National Best Teacher Award from Manam Foundation, Hyderabad, and the District Best Teacher Award from the Department of School Education, East Godavari.Her own academic journey began in Rajahmundry, East Godavari district, where she was born on 21 July 1988. The only daughter of Sri Vishwam, a former principal of his own college, and Smt. Suneetha, a retired government school headmaster, Ramya Sudha grew up in an environment shaped by education. A class topper from KG to PG, she entered government teaching through DSC in 2012 on her first attempt at the age of 24. Her husband, Raja Akasapu, is also a government school teacher, while their daughter Riona is studying in Class 4.
The philosophy guiding her work is straightforward: every person has individual abilities and should not measure their progress against someone else. Ramya Sudha encourages young people to compete with themselves, improve on yesterday’s achievements, set new goals and respect nature. It is a message that reflects her own journey, one built not merely on professional recognition, but on the belief that education becomes truly meaningful when it helps a child discover what they are capable of becoming.For Ramya Sudha, teaching is therefore not confined to a timetable or a syllabus. It is an opportunity to build confidence, encourage curiosity and create possibilities. Through every experiment, research paper, student achievement and act of service, she continues to show how one committed teacher can make a lasting difference.
