A 26-year-old Punjabi woman, Navneet Kaur, was shot dead in Toronto, Canada, in what police have described as a targeted killing. Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the incident and charged him with first-degree murder and breaching a court undertaking.
According to investigators, the accused spoke with Navneet for some time before opening fire. He fled the scene after the shooting but was later tracked down and taken into custody.
Family alleges accused was forcing her to marry him
Navneet’s family has alleged that the accused, despite already being married, had been pressuring her to marry him against her wishes. They claimed she had returned to Punjab a few months ago to distance herself from him, but he continued to pursue her.
Family members alleged that after Navneet repeatedly rejected his advances, the accused shot her dead. Police are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the killing.

- Incident occurred in the morning, woman died on the spot: According to police, the incident took place around 7:23 AM on July 24 in the Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard (Arborwood Drive) area of Toronto. The accused’s name is Sharandeep Singh (37). According to police, there was a conversation between the accused and Navneet Kaur for some time before the incident. After this, he fired at the woman. Upon receiving information, the emergency team reached the spot and tried to save her, but she died at the scene.
- Accused fled from there, resident of Brampton: After the incident, the accused had fled from the scene. Later, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested him. The accused is a resident of Brampton. He was presented in the Ontario Court of Justice on July 25, 2026.

Family says accused harassed her after marriage proposal was rejected
Navneet Kaur’s family alleged that the accused had known her through their workplace in Canada but insisted there was never any romantic relationship between them.
According to her cousin, Malkeet Singh, the man was already married and had children, yet repeatedly pressured Navneet to marry him after divorcing his wife. When she refused, he allegedly began harassing and threatening her.
Family claims repeated complaints were ignored
The family said Navneet had lodged a complaint with the Canadian police about the accused’s alleged harassment. They also contacted the accused’s family in India, informing them about his behaviour.
According to the family, his relatives admitted they too were troubled by his conduct. They believe the killing could have been prevented had the authorities acted firmly on her complaint.
Fear forced her to return to Punjab temporarily
Family members said Navneet travelled back to Punjab around two to three months ago because she feared for her safety. After spending time with her family, she returned to Canada to resume her job and focus on her career.
Police appeal for CCTV and dashcam footage
Toronto Police have appealed to the public for information that could assist the investigation. Investigators have urged anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to come forward and have also requested anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. Police said the case marks the city’s 22nd homicide of 2026.
