Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a significant role in preventing Russian President Vladimir Putin from using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine at the end of 2022.
Speaking at a press briefing, Bartoszewski said Russian President Putin “actually pays attention” to what PM Modi tells him, highlighting India’s influence in efforts to prevent the Russia-Ukraine conflict from escalating further.
‘Putin listens to PM Modi’
The Polish Deputy Foreign Minister described PM Modi as a globally respected leader with a unique relationship with Russia. “President Putin actually pays attention to what Prime Minister Modi tells him. I mentioned the role Prime Minister Modi played in stopping Putin from using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine at the end of 2022,” Bartoszewski said.
He added that India’s close ties with Russia have enabled New Delhi to maintain direct communication with Moscow even during the ongoing war.
Poland praises India’s diplomatic role
Bartoszewski also praised India’s balanced foreign policy, saying New Delhi has maintained constructive engagement with both Russia and Ukraine while consistently advocating dialogue over conflict. He said India’s position has made it an important global voice in efforts to reduce tensions.
India’s consistent call for peace
Since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022, India has repeatedly called for diplomacy and dialogue to end the conflict. PM Modi has consistently maintained that “this is not an era of war” while engaging with leaders from both Russia and Ukraine.
The Polish Deputy FM’s remarks underscore India’s growing diplomatic influence in global affairs, although he did not provide further details on the discussions that allegedly helped avert the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
